Erosion around bridge piers is a widely research topic in open channel flows. However, the knowledge on erosion around piers during tsunami is fairly new. In this study, I conducted experiments to eliminate time scale effects to accurately measure tsunami scour depth around bridge piers. Interestingly, it was observed that the tsunami scour depth is twice that of steady flow scour depth. Hence, the empirical steady flow scour equations cannot be applied to design bridge piers.
